As an avid reader/watcher/lover of anything science fiction fantasy, I am offended when people refer to themselves or others who like Sci-Fi and Fantasy as dorks or geeks. I am not a whale’s penis nor a person who bites heads off of small game poultry such as chickens.
Just because it’s cool to like Star Wars and X-men now, due to the movies and mass marketing/merchandise materials that the controlling commercial entities in this country decided it was okay to promote/produce, doesn’t mean you know anything about the culture.
Come talk to me about Tolkien or Herbert; come talk to me about Gaiman or Kenyon, King, how about Vonnegut, Heinlein, Lovecraft and Orwell, Kirkman, Miller, Roddenberry, Shakespeare, Verne, Lewis, or maybe Kirby and Eisner, Martin, Salvatore, Goodkind or Butler? Come talk to me about them.
And those are just a few names that just sprung into my head, don’t really let me get started and put all you posers to shame. I was reading Dune and The Hobbit when you all were reading Goosebumps and the Wayside School books. (Which by the way were so fun! Do you remember those?) When everyone was busy coloring in their Power Rangers and My Little Pony coloring books I was busy reading Spiderman, Superman, Batman, X-men/X-force, Spawn, Youngbloods and Savage Dragon comics and trying to draw the characters.
I have been coming up with my own hero’s and my own universes since I can remember. I have been not only creating and writing but also reading and escaping into dozens of mystical worlds and fantastic unknown dimensions my whole life. I may not flaunt it like some, but that’s because for me it’s not a fashion statement. This all may be a fad for some but for me this is a big part of my life. A big part of who I am as an artist, musician and creator.
Much respect to the real diehards out there, and props to those who are interested in finding out more. There is so much material out there to love. If you are offended by this short essay than you should be; if you understand where I am coming from then you probably have as genuine a love for Science Fiction and Fantasy as I do.
A person who is into crime drama’s, fashion, historical cultures or sports is not referred to in a derogatory manner. And neither should be the Sci-Fi/Fantasy buff. In fact a person who has a penchant for imaginative creations and understanding that which is not easy to understand should probably be regarded to with endearment. We are the free thinkers, we are the innovators, we are the future.
